Sigh that followed knew

I stretched my back up,

and my arms out and arched,

my eyes drew up towards the stairs

and for a split second,

I breathed and forgot what

year I was in,

and for a moment wondered

when you’d be coming down the stairs

but as quickly as it came,

I saw the steps

for what they are,

ones that were never ours,

that your feet have never walked,

and the eyes that used to spend hours

looking into yours

fell back down to my feet

and the hollow remnants of our time

together slipped back

into my mind from which it came,

and the sigh that followed knew,

and the sigh that followed knew
